熊本地震から10年（2026.4.14）Ten years since the Kumamoto Earthquake

発生研の皆様

本日 、熊本地震の発生 (2016.4.14) から10年を迎えました。この地震によって尊い命を落とされた278名の方々に対し、心よりご冥福をお祈り申し上げます。

発生研にも、ご自宅が全壊・損壊された方々、怪我を負われた方々がおられました。大変な経験を乗り越えてここまで歩んでこられた皆様に深く敬意を表します。また地震発生後2年にわたる研究所の復旧に際しては、所員の皆様をはじめ、学内外の多くの方々からご支援いただきました。研究活動を再開して今日まで継続できていることは皆様のご尽力の賜物です。改めて感謝いたします。

現在の科学では地震の発生を予測することはできません。ご自宅の家具や研究室の機器が確実に固定されているか、もう一度ご確認ください。こうした備えは物的被害を防ぐだけでなく、ご自身の命を守ることにもつながります。

また、命を守るには水が不可欠です。10年前の地震では電気、水道、ガスが止まった上に、道路、鉄道、空港のすべてが大きな被害を受けて外部からの救援が約3日間途絶えました。私自身も水を確保できず途方に暮れたことを今でも鮮明に覚えています。非常時に備え、一人あたり1日3リットルx 3日分＝計9リットルの飲料水を常備しておくことをお勧めします。参考：　 https://www.maff.go.jp/j/zyukyu/foodstock/imadoki/imadoki02_10.html

この節目の日を災害への備えを見直す機会としていただければ幸いです。

Dear all IMEG members,

Today marks ten years since the Kumamoto Earthquake (Apr 14, 2016). I would like to pray for the 278 people who lost their lives in this disaster.

At our institute as well, there were members whose homes were completely or partially destroyed, and others who sustained injuries. I would like to express my profound respect to all of you who have endured such hardship and persevered to reach this day. Furthermore, during the two years required to restore the institute following the earthquake, we received tremendous support and cooperation from our staff and from many individuals both inside and outside the university. Thanks to your efforts, we were able to resume and continue our research activities. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to you all.

Even with modern science, it is impossible to predict earthquakes. Please ensure that furniture in your homes and equipment in your laboratories are properly secured. Such measures not only protect property, but also help safeguard your own lives.

In addition, securing water is vital for sustaining life. Ten years ago, during the earthquake, not only were electricity, water and gas cut off, but roads, railways and airports were also severely damaged, preventing outside relief from reaching Kumamoto City for about three days. I strongly encourage everyone to prepare for emergencies by keeping three liters of drinking water per person per day for three days, for a total of nine liters.

I hope we can take this opportunity to renew our commitment to disaster preparedness.
